Biography

Cantor Yoni Rose was born and raised in Baltimore, MD. He grew up surrounded by music. His parents introduced all kinds of musical styles to their children, and together the family enjoyed music as varied as Chazanus, Chasidish, Reb Shlomo Carlebach, Shlock Rock, Opera, and Broadway. His family was known for their beautiful zmiros and prodigious abilities when davening for the Amud.

Yoni grew up praying in Shtieblech and Synagogues around Baltimore, absorbing the sincere devotion that is emblematic of today’s Litvish davening. In his teenage years, Yoni was fortunate to be introduced to Chazan Avi Albrecht. Chazan Albrecht served as his teacher and mentor in the Cantorial arts, schooling him in the full range of Cantorial music. Yoni received a full scholarship to study voice at the University of Maryland, and received both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in that subject. Yoni also works and performs with world-renowned conductor Elli Jaffe of the Jerusalem Great Synagogue, who continues to serve as a musical mentor throughout Yoni’s career.

Yoni has had great success on many stages. He has won awards in the Metropolitan Opera vocal competition, as well as the Frank Liszt Garrison Competition. His beautiful, dramatic sound and large range allow him to present unique interpretations of many types of music. His lyric tenor voice can move easily through the most difficult coloratura while still maintaining a heroic timbre, yet is flexible enough to perform popular music as well.

Yoni is in demand on many stages. He performs regularly as a concert artist in cities around the world, including Frankfurt, Hannover, Augsburg, Prague, Budapest, Jerusalem, Petach Tikva, Baltimore, Santa Fe, and many others.  He appears with many orchestras as a featured soloist. He also presents fully realized programs with piano, illustrating the concert’s theme with various types of music. In concert, Yoni performs a variety of musical styles: Chazanus, Chasidish, Yiddish, Jewish popular music, Opera, and classical songs.

Yoni also appears as a guest Chazan at Synagogues throughout the world. He davens regularly at the Beth Tfiloh Synagogue in Baltimore. He also led services at the Jerusalem Great Synagogue under the baton of Maestro Elli Jaffe. Yoni’s davening is a unique blend of Nusach, Chazanus, sing-along, and Chasidish music. Each service is tailored for the specific needs of the individual congregation.

Yoni serves as the Chazan of the Frankfurt Jewish Community. In that capacity, he leads weekly services, life-cycle events such as Chuppot, Bar Mitzvas, and funerals, and teaches Bar Mitzva lessons.
